If you open a Greek map, you will find Chalkidiki southern of Thessaloniki. Many people from Thessaloniki have summer houses in Chalkidiki and going there every summer and in weekends. They really love this area.
We have a joke for Chalkidiki and people from Thessaloniki. If you meet someone from Thessaloniki in a different area of Greece the summer and ask him if he likes the area, he will answer to you that is good “but not like Chalkidiki”.
But why these people are in love with Chalkidiki?
Well, Chalkidiki is really beautiful. It has many kilometers (or miles if you prefer) of beaches with clean blue sea anywhere. And it’s green also with many pine forests although we lost many pines from fires the last decade.
Chalkidiki is near Thessaloniki. You can go there easily from Thessaloniki and it has many bus routes, particularly the summer. It’s not island but it’s like island because it’s peninsula.
We usually call the south part of Chalkidiki “legs of Chalkidiki” and you will understand the reason if you see the map. The third leg of Chalkidiki, the eastern, it’s the “Agio Oros”. Agio Oros is a self-governed monastic state and only mens can go there or visit the area.
Chalkidiki is a well known summer destination for Germans mostly but the last years, since they accept Bulgaria in the European Union, you can also find Servians, Bulgarians and Russians tourists also.
In Chalkidiki you can find many hotels and rooms to let for your vacation. Most of them are close to sea and shops but you can also find rooms farther from villages and sea which are more quietly. When I said farther I mean you must walk up to 15-20 minutes usually if you want to go to sea without vehicle. When you book a room it’s good to ask how far is the the room from sea and village.
